Deacon told us that as we celebrate the octave of Christmas, which began Christmas Eve. During this time we reflect on the mysteries of God's love that is made visible in the birth and early childhood of Jesus Christ. This day is set as an example of a model of a holy family. But just because we call them a holy family, it doesn't mean they didn't have  problems, as is obvious in today's Gospel. Also, as seen in the Gospel, even though Jesus was God, still he was obedient to His earthly parents. As such, we are to be obedient to our heavenly Father.

December 24, 2018 Christmas Eve Night Mass

Deacon told us about what Christmas is all about. We celebrate the memorial of the birth of Christ, but more than that. The answer is twofold. The first is what we've been celebrating for 4 weeks during advent. During those 4 weeks we awaited this night, and we became and realized that the greatest gift given to humanity was the gift of God in the form of the child Jesus. It is not about all the other material gifts we give and receive. It is in the simplicity of a baby born this night. God loves us so much that He took on human form so that we might see what love is really all about.

Deacon told us about the Christmas story, and how we never tire of it. The story celebrates the closeness of God to us. It moves us towards the horizon where time touches eternity. The newborn child is our link with God. The simplicity of it all challenges us to get rid of falseness and pretenses, otherwise we will never realize our need for a savior. We need to acknowledge our dependence on our God.
